Egg Harbor Township — A group of vandals toppled several headstones inside a Jewish cemetery in Atlantic County over the weekend, causing thousands of dollars in damages to the graveyard, police said.
Employees at the Rodeph Sholom Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township discovered the damage around 8:30 a.m. yesterday, according to Lt. Robert Gray. The workers told police that 15 headstones had been pushed out of place or toppled over, Gray said.
The weight of some of the tombstones led police to believe that more than one person was involved, Gray said. An early estimate showed the vandals caused approximately $5,000 in damages to the cemetery.
