German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly said she was determined to lead the battle against the resurgence of anti-Semitism throughout Europe, during a meeting in Berlin with the European Jewish Congress leadership.
Her pledge came after the European Jewish body, which had asked for the meeting, expressed its concern about the rising problem and asked Germany “to act stronger” against it.
The EJC also discussed with Merkel a German proposal to harmonize hate crime legislation throughout the European Union.
Germany currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency.
