Leer – Unknown people have desecrated several gravestones in a Jewish cemetery in Leer, East Frisia.

When asked on Tuesday, a police spokesman in Leer said three gravestones had been kicked over or overturned. The case was reported on Monday. The state security agency has initiated an investigation into the disturbance of the peace of the dead, the spokesman said. There is still no concrete suspicion.

The regional association of Jewish communities in Lower Saxony reported the crime. “Three gravestones were damaged, the gate was demolished and the sign was removed,” said Gideon Riethmüller, board member of the regional association.
