Halberstadt – Renewed vandalism of Jewish remembrance: The banner on Willy-Cohn-Platz in Halberstadt was cut up by unknown persons. It shows a map of the historic Jewish quarter and Jewish shops at the beginning of the 20th century.

“I saw this by chance at the weekend while I was out and about in the city,” says Jutta Dick, board member of the Moses Mendelssohn Academy, which created the banner in cooperation with the Harz University of Applied Sciences and the State Center for Civic Education.

At first she thought the storm was to blame for the destruction – “but if you look closely, you can see that there are cuts,” she explains when asked. The banner has been hanging there since September 8, 2023, the day of open Jewish houses last year, “and we were really proud that nothing happened for so long,” she says. A report was filed and the police began an investigation.
