Australia – Jewish doctor has been violently assaulted in Melbourne

Melbourne – A 76-year-old Jewish doctor has been violently assaulted near his home at Brighton St on New Year’s Day in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton.

Victoria Police said the 76-year-old went to check on an unconscious man who was lying on a nature strip in Bay Street at about 6.15am on Monday.

The man allegedly became aggressive and assaulted the doctor when he offered assistance.

The agitated man then followed the doctor home and smashed his front door, allegedly threatening another attack.

Victoria Police told SkyNews.com.au a 29-year-old man was arrested for assault.

Brighton MP James Newbury posted on X following the incident, saying the victim was a “much loved” Jewish doctor.

Victoria Police said the 29-year-old was quickly arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

He is expected to be questioned regarding the incident at a later date.

The Brighton doctor sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been described by investigators as a good Samaritan for attempting to provide medical attention to the 29-year-old.
