Germany – Jewish perspectives on antisemitism in Germany 2017 – 2020

The Federal Association of Antisemitism Research and Information Centers e. V. (Federal Association RIAS) evaluated over 150 interviews with Jewish communities and individuals throughout Germany. The analysis of the interviews conducted between 2017 and 2020 is available to the public for the first time.

Antisemitism is an everyday phenomenon for Jews in Germany, as shown by the publication Jewish Perspectives on Antisemitism in Germany 2017 – 2020, which the Federal Association RIAS published on February 28, 2023. Those surveyed report antisemitic incidents at the dentist, at the school graduation ceremony or while looking for an apartment. This has fundamental effects on Jews in Germany, for example on how openly they identify themselves as Jewish.

The evaluation comes to the conclusion that Jews sometimes perceive antisemitism very differently than the non-Jewish majority society. This becomes particularly clear when it comes to security issues. Many respondents not only reported antisemitic incidents, but also a lack of solidarity in the face of such incidents.

The publication Jewish Perspectives on Antisemitism in Germany 2017 – 2020 provides an analysis of six aspects that are particularly relevant for those affected by antisemitism: the effects of the terrorist attack in Halle and Wiedersdorf on Jews, the consequences of antisemitism in the living environment of those affected , the effects of Israel-related antisemitism and individual ways of dealing with it. In addition, it is examined to what extent political and ideological backgrounds play a role and what the relationship with the law enforcement authorities is like.

The publication Jewish Perspectives on Antisemitism in Germany 2017-2020 is now available on the RIAS Federal Association website.
