Brazil – Antisemitic incidents increased by 960 percent since October 7

Complaints related to anti-Semitism grew by more than 961% in Brazil last October compared to the same period in 2022. The occasion is related to the terrorist actions of the Palestinian group Hamas, which has been at war with Israel since last month. 

The unprecedented data was presented by the Israeli Confederation of Brazil (Conib) and the Israeli Federation of Rio Grande do Sul (FIRS) at simultaneous events in Porto Alegre, Brasília, São Paulo, Recife and Salvador this Thursday, International Day to Combat Fascism and Antisemitism.

In October 2023, there were 467 antisemitic complaints filed with the Conib/FIRS Community Security Department, compared to 44 in October 2022, an increase of 961.36%. Between January and October this year, there were 876 complaints, and in the same period last year, 375, an increase of 133.6%. Between the months of January and September, there were 331 complaints in 2022 and 411 in 2023, before the current conflict, that is, 24.17% more.

In RS, the event took place in the FIRS auditorium, in the Bom Fim neighborhood. The event also featured a panel, with the presence of the entity’s president, Márcio Chachamovich, the doctor in Communication and professor at PUCRS, Jacques Wainberg, the head of the Civil Police Combat Intolerance Department in RS, Tatiana Bastos, in addition to the Colonel João Trindade, retired former commander of the Military Brigade (BM).
