Denmark – Justice Minister: Antisemitism is increasing in Denmark

According to Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard (Soc.), the threat to Jews in Denmark has increased since the Hamas movement’s attack on Israel on October 7th.

The minister told “Jyllands-Posten” that the Jewish community is trying to record and register the many threats and harassment against Jews living in Denmark based on the reports it receives.

“We don’t have a central register with the authorities, so I rely on the reports that the Jewish security organization has,” said Hummelgaard. He meets weekly with the Jewish community in Denmark.

Jyllands-Posten has not received any concrete figures on the number of incidents. According to the minister, numbers require people to report incidents. “And right now, many Danish Jews feel so harassed and exposed that they don’t want to attract further attention by reporting a possible crime,” he says.

Hummelgaard reports that he has heard stories about high school students with a Jewish background who were attacked by classmates or teachers.

Jyllands-Posten also reports examples of fellow Jews hiding religious necklaces under their shirts or not speaking Hebrew on the street for fear of being spat on.
