London – Students at a girls’ private school in north London were left ‘shocked and upset’ by anti-Semitic vandalism found in a bathroom on site earlier today.
In a letter to parents, the £24,000-a-year Channing School in Highgate assured that graffiti was ‘immediately’ removed and individuals directed towards pastoral care.
‘Nonetheless, a number of students saw what had been written and this has had an impact on the school community this afternoon,’ headteacher Lindsey Hughes said.
A source told MailOnline today: ‘Apparently it was a Nazi swastika sign and the words “kill Jews” were written in the toilets.
‘Everyone was shocked because Channing is a super posh school.’
Last Friday, the Met claimed reports of Islamophobia and antisemitism had doubled within a week in the capital in light of the conflict in the southern Levant.
MailOnline contacted the school for comment and verification.
In a statement to parents from the school, Ms Hughes said: ‘I know [some students] are already devastated about something like this happening in our school community – as am I.
‘I will be speaking to the whole school tomorrow morning to reiterate unequivocally that antisemitism is abhorrent, unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
‘It has no place in our school and I am personally horrified that any student should have expressed such a view, and in this way.
‘While we are unable to identify the author of this graffiti, I will make clear that I expect them to contemplate their actions and urge them to come clean about their involvement.
‘I have no doubt that you will share my outrage and unhappiness at this situation and please rest assured that every adult in the school community will be working to ensure that this cannot happen again.’
