Italy – Restaurant in Naples daubed with antisemitic graffiti

Naples – “Zionists are not welcome”. The message to the Jews is clear and direct, for them the heart of the historic center is off-limits. This, at least, is the diktat that has appeared in the last few hours in the area between Piazza del Gesù and Decumani.

And this is enough to raise a case, in Naples. A case that would risk appearing even more disturbing if it were linked to the same sentence, printed with spray paint in clear capital letters with a sort of “subtitle” in Arabic which appeared next to a restaurant which – at least until last October 7th – was frequented by numerous Israeli tourists visiting Naples.

The translation of the Arabic writing that accompanies that message written surely with a spray paint normograph: “El Ayun”. El Ayun is a Moroccan city in the Western Sahara region currently controlled mostly by Morocco and disputed with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, not recognized by Morocco itself. And it is also the capital of the Moroccan province of Laâyoune, proclaimed capital of the Sahrawi Republic. The word can also be translated as “the speed” or “the gaze”.
