RIAS

Antisemitic incidents with reference to the terrorist attacks on Israel between October 7–15, 2023

The Federal Association of Antisemitism Research and Information Centers (RIAS) has reported 202 antisemitic incidents in Germany. V documented between October 7th and October 15th. This is an increase of 240% compared to the same period last year. RIAS reporting centers nationwide have recorded a greatly increased number of reports since the start of the Hamas terrorist attacks.

Israel-related antisemitism dominates.

91% of documented incidents are Israel-related antisemitism. Israel was blamed for the massacres, antisemitic terror was legitimized and the state was demonized and delegitimized. This has been observed at anti-Israel gatherings nationwide. Example: On October 15, at a rally at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, slogans were shouted that called for the annihilation of Israel and glorified Hamas’s terrorist attack.

Disruptions to solidarity rallies nationwide.

During the evaluation period, the federal association RIAS documented 21 incidents in which rallies and minutes of silence were disrupted. In addition to shouting and insults, there was also one threat and six attacks. For example: In Kiel, participants in a solidarity rally were spat on. Israeli flags on public buildings were damaged or stolen in 33 cases. An Israeli flag was torn down and set on fire in Mainz.

Antisemitic markings discovered on apartments.

During the evaluation period, RIAS reporting centers recorded fifteen antisemitic incidents in the living environment of those affected. Residential buildings were daubed with Stars of David, which seemed particularly threatening. RIAS reporting centers in Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia have become aware of ten such graffiti cases. In three incidents it is known that Jews live in the apartments. These markings are reminiscent of the labeling of Jews under National Socialism and are particularly unsettling for those affected.
