Marzahn-Hellersdorf – The Israel flag hoisted in front of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf town hall was desecrated.
According to the district office, unknown persons were observed at around 8:15 p.m. tearing it from the flagpole and setting it on fire some distance away. A witness managed to put out the fire. Police forces recovered the damaged flag.
District Mayor Nadja Zivkovic (CDU) condemned the incident on Monday afternoon: “In view of the heinous attack on Israel and its people, individuals are obviously trying to cause unrest in Berlin too. “A destroyed flag does not diminish our compassion, nor our support and great solidarity with our Jewish fellow citizens and the people of Israel,” said Zivkovic. The district filed a complaint. A new solidarity flag has been restored.
