Germany – Charges after arson attack on Ulm synagogue

Two years after the arson attack on the Ulm synagogue, the public prosecutor’s office brought charges against a 47-year-old man with a Turkish passport for attempted aggravated arson. The prosecutors assume a suspected antisemitic motive.

The 47-year-old is accused of spreading gasoline along an outside wall of the synagogue and setting it on fire in June 2021. The fire was said to have engulfed significant parts of the building, according to a statement from the public prosecutor’s office. However, the fire did not spread any further. The police were able to finally delete it. The accused admitted the crime, the public prosecutor told SWR.

The defendant lived in Ulm until the crime, but then fled to Turkey . Two years later, in July 2023, he re-entered Germany via Stuttgart Airport. Why is still unclear, according to the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office. He was arrested at the airport. The 47-year-old has been in custody since then.
