USA – Oregon DOJ report shows growth in hate and bias incidents

The Oregon Department of Justice

The Oregon Department of Justice says its annual bias report shows troubling growth in hate and bias incidents statewide.

According to the DOJ, bias-motivated reports called into the Bias Response Hotline have increased 178% since the hotline launched in 2020.

They say more than 2,500 bias crimes and incidents were reported in 2022.

Nearly 1 in 4 bias-motivated reports were anti-Black-African-American in nature.

The number of religious motivated bias reports increased from 66 in 2020 to 251 in 2022.

The DOJ said 75% of those were antisemitic in nature, and anti-LGBTQ+ bias reporting also increased drastically.

Reports of gender-identity-based bias rose 639% since 2020 and reported anti-sexual orientation bias went up 430%.

The DOJ noted that the increases may be due in part to improved outreach.
