The number of politically motivated crimes registered by the authorities in Brandenburg increased by almost 20 percent compared to the previous year. This emerges from data from the Ministry of the Interior on Thursday.

Accordingly, a total of 4,384 such offenses were counted last year. This means that the peak from 2021 – at that time there were 3,661 offenses – was once again significantly exceeded. The statistics have been collected for 20 years.

This continues a long-standing trend in the development of politically motivated crimes in the federal state. In 2013, the number of such crimes was 1,786. Since then it has steadily increased. Only in 2018 and 2020 did crime fall briefly, only to increase again even more significantly afterwards.

For years, most politically motivated crimes have been assigned by far to the right-wing spectrum. There were 2,046 cases in 2022, an increase of 13 percent over the previous year.

Unlike in previous years, however, another group of politically motivated crimes is almost catching up with those from the right-wing spectrum: these are so-called politically unassignable crimes that are nevertheless considered politically motivated. In 2022, it was mainly crimes committed in connection with the corona pandemic. In total, these came to 1,992 cases.

On the other hand, crimes associated with the left-wing milieu have fallen to 232 cases, a significant drop of 40 percent compared to the previous year.
