Brussels City Council has adopted a plan to fight racism and antisemitism on the eve of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The plan, adopted on Monday evening, is based on the principles of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The plan is to be updated every two years. It sets concrete objectives for fighting specific types of discrimination and structural racism in a city that is among the most cosmopolitan in the world.
The measures are mainly aimed at training city staff and raising awareness among the different generations of Brussels society, starting with children and young people in schools and sports activities.
In the City’s schools, the plan provides for special attention to be paid to the history of colonialism and immigration, without abandoning the duty to remember.
The plan also foresees the display of a logo linked to the awareness campaign of the Brussels Anti-Racist Plan on the city’s fleet of vehicles.
The fight against racism and antisemitism will be included in the code of ethics signed by all municipal civil servants when they are hired.
The employment and housing departments will also be involved in the fight against the phenomenon in their respective sectors.
And the stated will of the police is to make the profiling done by the officers more objective.
