2022 Antisemitism report in French-speaking Switzerland

In 2022, CICAD has registered 562 antisemitic acts in Roman Switzerland. This considerable amount of recorded incidents is due to several factors: widening of observed sources, very prolific activity in Geneva, and an increase in cases of antisemitism. However, if our statistics were only focused on the same sources as the previous year, CICAD would count 283 acts against 165 in 2021, an increase of 70%.

The point is without appeal: in Roman Switzerland, antisemitism persists and continues to grow.

In addition, 3 serious offences and 23 serious offences have been recorded in 2022 (compared to 5 serious offences and 7 serious offences last year).

    The main vectors of antisemitism:

    – The extreme right: the extreme right is still present in Roman Switzerland. His hatred of Jews and various minorities is expressed daily.

    – Conspiracy theories: Conspiracy adapts quickly to the news and the Internet promotes its spread to demonstrations and conferences. Antisemitism remains very present among both old and new conspiracy theories. This year, the conflict in Ukraine has been a major source of Jewish conspiracy theories.

    – Negativeism remains marginal in Roman Switzerland. However the denialists present in our region are very active and account for a large portion of the recorded cases in 2022,

    – The news in the Middle East is generally a constant source of antisemitic comments on social media. However, antisemitism related to Israel has been less significant this year. However, two peaks were observed in May, after the death of Shireen Abu Akleh and in August, during clashes between Islamic Jihad and the Israeli army in Gaza.

    – Local news also influences antisemitism. In 2022, an antisemitic file released by the Federal Commission on Racism and a Tataki Media video addressing stereotypes about the Jewish community have sparked a wave of antisemite comments online.
