Germany – 38-year-old fined after antisemitic incident at Union game

The district court in Berlin-Tiergarten has sentenced a 38-year-old to a fine of 7,200 euros for antisemitic incidents at a Union Berlin game. A court spokeswoman said the football fan was convicted of attempted dangerous bodily harm and attempted criminal damage to multiple incidents during Union’s conference league game against Maccabi Haifa in September 2021.

As a spectator of the game in the Olympic Stadium last year, the 38-year-old tried to light an Israeli flag. According to the indictment, this act was motivated by antisemitism. According to the court, the now convicted spectator also threw a lit cigarette and a plastic cup into the opposing block. He accepted the injury of other fans.

With its verdict, the court was still below the demand of the public prosecutor. She had applied for a suspended sentence of seven months, while the defense had only pleaded for a fine.
