Hungary – Sziget Festival bans Spanish band after it defaced Israeli flag

The Spanish band Tribade has been expelled from the Sziget Festival after its members desecrated an Israeli flag, event’s organizers said Monday.

The festival’s management condemned the band’s actions and said the band will be banned from performing in future events.

Viktória Vető, Sziget’s press chief, sent us an official announcement regarding the action of the band Tribade:

“Sziget Festival was founded almost 30 years ago to create a place where people of all nationalities can come together in the spirit of love and peace, a purpose that remains unchanged. The actions of the group Tribade are against our cherished values of welcome and respect and we deeply condemn this hateful stunt.
 
They will, of course, not be invited back to our festivals in the future.”

The Sziget Festival is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe, and is held annually in Budapest, Hungary.

The five-day festival attracts tourists from around the world, including many Israelis. The festival’s lineup this year includes Justin Bieber, Arctic Monkeys, Dua Lipa and many others.

Tribade, also performed at the event, and two of its members later filmed themselves desecrating the Israeli flag which was hung on one of the tents at the festival grounds.

With the band’s songs was playing in the background, the pair filmed themselves writing “Free Palestine” on the flag. They also painted a male sex organ on it, with the words “Eat This” written next to it. The footage was uploaded to the band’s Instagram account.

The festival officials said Tuesday: “The Sziget Festival was founded almost 30 years ago to create an environment where people of all nationalities could join in love and peace, and it remains its goal. Tribade’s actions are an offence to the festival’s values of acceptance and respect, and we harshly condemn their vile actions. The band will be banned from performing in the future.”
