Since 2001, Antisemitism.be has been listing antisemitic acts committed throughout Belgium and, each year, publishes a report on antisemitism in Belgium. In this report, you will find the list of all incidents recorded, our work methodology, as well as an analysis of the past year.
The incidents listed and analyzed in this report are those which have been communicated to us or which have been the subject of a complaint for racism. The figures included in this analysis of course reflect a trend and not an exact picture in antisemitism in Belgium.
• Antisemitism.be record 119 reports in 2021. The highest number since the census began in 2001.
• This increase could be linked to the “Guardians of the Walls” operation between Israel and Hamas. The conflict in the Middle East is regularly used as a pretext for the expression of antisemitism under the guise of anti-Zionism.
• The year 2021 was also marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated frustrations and fears of all kinds. Jews are regularly targeted, being held in turn responsible for the disease, or, profiting from it.
• Reports on the internet have increased significantly. +62.75% in 2021
• Reports of antisemitic acts committed in public spaces have decreased.
• The majority of incidents noted, outside the internet, took place in Antwerp and Brussels.
• In May, during Operation Guardian of the Walls between Israel and Hamas, an average of 6 antisemitic acts per day was recorded.
• 3 physical attacks took place in Antwerp
