Huntington Beach, CA – Residents in a Huntington Beach neighborhood awoke Tuesday morning to find flyers on their front lawns that contained hate-speech messages, and authorities were investigating.
Police were seeking clues to figure out who left the flyers with antisemitic messages outside the roughly 15 homes in a cul-de-sac near Bushard Street and Hamilton Avenue, spokeswoman Jennifer Carey said.
Investigators have tried to reach the residents and left voicemails for those who were not available, Carey said.
Huntington Beach Mayor Barbara Delgleize said that though the flyers were isolated to a “very small area,” detectives were taking it seriously and following leads.
“The messaging contained within these flyers do not reflect the values or ideas we believe here in Huntington Beach,” Delgleize said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. “We have zero tolerance for hateful rhetoric of prejudice within our community.”
The city’s Human Relations Committee, which works with the county to look into hate incidents, also has been notified, Carey said.
The two-sided flyers distributed in Huntington Beach included language about the Biden administration and the coronavirus pandemic, according to a photo provided to the Southern California News Group, while the flyers distributed in Pasadena and Beverly Hills did not include the political speech.
