The Web Observatory (OW), a joint program between the CJL, AMIA and DAIA, published its online antisemitism report corresponding to the survey of social networks and online media during the past year.
The report highlights that in 2020 the level of antisemitism on the Internet in Latin America remained stable compared to the previous year. Ariel Seidler, director of the program, referred to the importance that civil society organizations can monitor online hate speech with Internet companies. “It is vitally important to have periodic and reliable measurements that serve to understand this phenomenon and act accordingly to help create a hate-free digital environment,” he added.
On Google, searches related to Jewish themes are similar in negative or antisemitic results compared to 2019. Only 3% of these searches return antisemitic results.
Analyzing the first ten results of YouTube searches that contain words or concepts related to the Jewish theme, the report shows that 10.19% of this material contains antisemitic content, while 61.1% is favorable content. antisemitic videos are mostly related to conspiracy theories like the Andinia Plan. The Holocaust denial videos were largely removed by the platform. The analyzed videos can be categorized into 4 groups: Posted by far-right groups, published by channels directly or indirectly related to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In the media portals, the main newspapers of seven countries in the region were analyzed. 13.1% of comments are antisemitic on news involving Israel or Jewish communities. In Argentina, there was a marked decrease compared to 2019 in antisemitic comments from readers in the main online media: La Nación, Clarín and Infobae.
