The memorial for the Düsseldorf synagogue set on fire

Düsseldorf – A stranger set fire to the memorial for the former great synagogue in Kasernenstrasse. The state security is investigating attempted property damage and looking for witnesses, the police said on Tuesday. The stranger deliberately set fire to rubbish on the memorial stone. The Jewish community in Düsseldorf interpreted the incident as an arson attack.
By late Monday evening, passers-by noticed the fire and alerted the police. Even before the fire brigade arrived, the fire had gone out by itself. There was no damage. The memorial stone was cleaned that evening – after the forensic investigation.
