London – Tottenham FC accused former MP George Galloway of “blatant antisemitism” after he said the club’s defeat in the Champions League final meant there were no “Israel flags on the cup”.

On Sunday, Mr Galloway tweeted his “congratulations” to Liverpool FC on beating Spurs 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday, saying: “Congratulations to the great people of Liverpool@.

After paying tribute to the late Bill Shankley and the 96 people killed in the Hillsborough disaster, he said: “No Israel flags on the cup!”

The tweet sparked anger, with Spurs fans pointing out Israeli flags were a rare sight at Spurs matches.

On Sunday evening, the club tweeted to condemn his remarks, suggesting Mr Galloway should lose his slot broadcasting on TalkRadio.

A club statement to Sky Sports News said: “It’s astounding in this day and age to read such blatant antisemitism published on a social platform by someone who is still afforded air time on a radio station on which he has previously broken broadcast impartiality rules.”
