Vannes – during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, antisemitic tags against Christine Angot were inscribed on the Palais des arts in Vannes. The novelist and TV columnist will be present Saturday in Vannes, on the occasion of the festival “Les Émancipéés”. Two complaints were filed at the police station.

“Revolting tags, I am extremely shocked.” Ghislaine Gouby, Director of the “Scènes du Golfe” in Vannes, who this week organizes the festival “Les Émancipéés”, has discovered the antisemitic tags, written on a wall behind the Palais des arts. At least five other tags of the same type had been painted in the tunnel leading to the Palais des arts, targeting the novelist and TV columnist Christine Angot, who is scheduled to perform at the festival on Saturday at 18 pm. On a face, drawn by street art artists, these few words were painted: “All together we will lynch Christine Angot on the 23rd of March”, accompanied by a swastika.

Scars were drawn on other faces painted in the tunnel. And on the wall reserved for artists present at the festival “Les Émancipéés”, the vandals inscribed under the name of Christine the words “her face should be cut”. In the morning, the tag inscribed on the wall of the Palais des Arts has been erased. The others, in the tunnel of the Palace of Arts, will be erased in the afternoon. “Christine Angot was informed, pictures were sent to her, explained Ghislaine Gouby. According to the police, this is the first time acts of this type have been perpetrated in Vanne.

“There cannot be any hate here”.

At noon a complaint was filed by EPCC Scènes du Golfe at the Vannes police station and another one in the afternoon by the Mayor of Vannes, David Robo. “I condemn in the strongest terms the anti-Semitic inscriptions discovered today on and around the Palais des Arts”, said David Robo in a statement. These inscriptions, in connection with the program of the Emancipéés Festival, are not welcome in Vannes. I fully support Ghislaine Gouby and her team: culture, the basis of openness and tolerance towards others, must not be a hostage to nauseating messages!”.

The mayor goes on to say that “hatred has never had a place in Vannes and will never have one. Our country today is unprecedentedy divided moraly and socialy and cities do not escape to this atmosphere, but we must find resources to fight it. The fight against anti-Semitism is an ongoing battle, and the mobilization a month ago on the esplanade of the Port, with a thousand people, showed how we should continue to remain united against this plague.

The festival “Les Émancipéés” takes place all week in Vannes, where several artists, journalists and intellectuals will perform (Claire Chazal, Christine Angot, Joey Starr, Clara Luciani …).
