Jean-Michel Blanquer said today that some 130 cases of racist or antisemitic acts were reported by schools in the the first quarter of 2019 to the monitoring and alert unit set up by the Ministry of Education.

Out of these 130 facts, about 16% “are anti-Semitic and include general and sometimes vague terms, graffiti and degradation” added the ministry. “515 of these acts are perpetrated by parents and 35% by pupil. Four schools stand out: Créteil with 30% of the reported facts, Lille with 15%, Versailles with 8% and Grenoble with 7%.

In June 2017, the Ministry set up a watch and alert unit to enable educational staff to report cases of offences against secularism. They can also report cases of racism and anti-Semitism and it is this number that the ministry unveils this Thursday for the first time.

Meanwhile, Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer launched a platform last December together with Dilcrah (inter-ministerial delegation to fight against racism, anti-Semitism and anti-LGBT hatred), which allows teachers, again, to report racist or anti-Semitic incidents. On this platform, 54 cases were reported, of which 16 were subsequently dismissed.
