Athens – The Central Council of the Jewish Communities of Greece (KIS) – the country’s EJC affiliate – has strongly condemned antisemitic comments by a former leading basketball player and coach towards the current Israeli coach of the country’s Olympiakos club.

Vangelis Alexandris referred to David Blatt’s “Jewish blood” as a factor in which he claimed that the latter was lying.

In a statement, KIS wrote that Alexandris’ comments “primarily insult Greek sports and the spirit of sport, which aims at uniting and not dividing peoples.”  “In a period when international sports associations are launching campaigns against racism and antisemitism, such references that instigate and escalate fanaticism and hatred in sports stadiums should not be tolerated in Greece,” the statement concluded.
