According to data from the Raxen 2017 Report, Spain has recorded about 600 incidents and hate crimes. However, “the Movement Against Intolerance” (Movimiento contra la Intolerancia), an organization responsible for the records of all incidents, stated that in fact, only 10% of the total number of actual attacks are registered. The organization estimates that total hate-crimes could be between 4,000 and 6,000.
In autonomous communities more incidents and hate-crimes were recorded. In Valencia 87 events were recorded followed by Catalonia with 83 and Madrid with 82 events.
Andalusia recorded 59 cases, Castile-Leon and Balearians 48 and 41 respectively followed by Basque and Murcia, with 40 and 34 respectively. Navarra recorded 26 cases.
Types of events: the largest number of attacks in 2017 were racist/xenophobia attacks and violence in football. The others were: homophobia/fear of poverty, neo-Nazi violence and cyber hatred/harassment in school.
According to the Movement Against Intolerance a comprehensive law against hate crimes and a general law against all discrimination and abuse should be enacted to encourage complaints and support victims.
Another necessary measure may be the closure of websites that encourage and incite hatred, discrimination, and violence. The organization also seeks to ban mass concerts, demonstrations and any form of activities that encourage these approaches.
