2016 Antisemitism report in Italy

In recent years, Jewish institutions which serve as possible targets of antisemitic activities have been provided better security; As a result of the increased security, a lesser number of violent actions occurred.

Although the attacks in Italy are fortunately not very frequent, this cannot be said of expressions of ideological or political hostility, aversion and prejudices towards Jews and more often towards Israel.

For several years, we have witnessed a profound change in the public discourse of active and rapidly growing minority groups resulting in a lower culture of respect for Jewish memory, the use of clichés, anti-Jewish stereotypes, official endorsement of antisemitism, politicians dwarfing the Holocaust, newspaper articles containing conspiracy statements.

Antisemitic stereotypes continue to exist in private and public conversations; sometimes antisemitism is expressed even in the media. This happened in a private radio network that broadcasts a program in several chapters to promote the conspiracy theories of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

As every year, expressions of racism and antisemitism in the stadiums, and in the world of sport as a whole, are plentiful.

Several parties express conspiracy approaches/opinions with respect to the power of the “Jewish lobby” and their supposed “behind-the-scenes maneuvers.”

The number of expressions of antisemitism on the Internet is rising, as seen by the language used in the targeted forums, in an insulting, cruel, and violent language. The number of profiles and antisemitic groups on Facebook has increased. The extreme right wing and sympathizers of the extreme left groups are the most active.

Antisemitic material continues to be published or uploaded to the Internet with few or no implications, without any consequences.

It is difficult to monitor the social media platforms and the legal means to cope with the insults and stereotypes that flow freely on the Internet are few. Denial and minimization of the Holocaust are more frequent and openly expressed.

During events of the Jewish calendar or the anniversaries of relevant historical events for the Jewish communities (Holocaust Remembrance Day, Jewish Culture Day, extreme-right groups organize antisemitic demonstrations.

The actions of the BDS movement are more numerous than last year, both on the Internet and as propaganda at university campuses and in the media.

Due to the large number of anti-Jewish material available on the Internet, it is necessary to search throughout the network and try to organize an analysis of the contents and the number of contacts of the various websites and web profiles.
