Welsh Labour council candidate suspended in antisemitism row

Llanbadarn Fawr, Aberystwyth – A Welsh Labour
council candidate has been suspended by the party pending an investigation into
allegations that he has posted material online that could be construed as
antisemitic.

Mike Sivier, a former local newspaper editor, is standing
for Powys County Council in Llanbadarn Fawr, near Llandrindod Wells.

He has rejected allegations made by the charity Campaign
Against Antisemitism (CAA)
that he is antisemitic, saying he had engaged on
social media with an individual he now regrets having linked with on social
media.

A spokeswoman for Welsh Labour said: “Mike Sivier has been
removed as a Labour Party candidate at the forthcoming local elections and an
investigation into his conduct is underway in line with Labour Party rules and
procedures.”
