Swastika found after Holocaust survivor visits school

Cross River, NY – Someone scrawled a swastika in a
bathroom at John Jay High School in Cross River Monday – a week after a
Holocaust survivor visited the school.

Students like Sophe Eberhardt say the vandalism is
demoralizing.

“It’s a subject that’s really, really dark,”
Eberhardt says, “After everything they showed us, prejudice and racism
still exist at our school.”

Superintendent Andrew Selesnick sent a letter home to
parents saying that he believed the graffiti was more about being
“disruptive” than “due to hate targeted at others.”

“Nonetheless, we redouble our efforts to find those
responsible,” he concluded.

Judith Altmann, the Holocaust survivor, was invited by
administrators to share her story with students last week.

Earlier this year, swastikas also turned up carved into
seats on a bus and on a tree outside the school.
