Pilot project designed to support teachers coping with
youths holding Salafism and antisemitism ideological background.
How can teachers cope with aggressive Islamic movements and
antisemitism in Berlin schools? 25 teachers from 15 schools will take part
during the next two years in a new project – “Activists against Salafism and
antisemitism”. The pilot, conducted by the Ministry of Education, Teacher
Training Institute LISUM and the American Jewish Committee, will begin on
Monday.
Sandra Scheeres (SPD) stressed the need to help teachers as
they struggle with Salafism, an Islamic movement rising
rapidly in Germany. Studies to date indicate that this movement succeed to
convince teens who feel insecure at home to join its ranks and believe in
slogans such as “infidels” or “Jews are the enemy.” Through
the program, teachers learn how to deal with problems of Islamic extremism and
develop new teaching materials on the subject.
