Racism in Spain – Annual Report 2015

SOS Racismo organization had
found a sharp increase of 700% in antisemitism incidents. According to the
annual report published by the organization, compared with 3 incidents in 2013, in 2014 there were
14 incidents. The organization, which based its information on the official data
of the Interior Ministry, said that hatred of the poor was increased by 175%.
Thus, 11 incidents reported in 2014 were a large increase from 4 incidents
reported in 2013.

 

In absolute terms, many cases are defined by sexual
orientation or gender identity, which increased by 50%, from 452 to 513. In addition, there was
a large increase in problems related to religious beliefs or practices, which
were increased by 50%, from 42 to 63.

 

Racial discrimination in institutions engaging with
immigration and naturalization recorded moderate increase. While in 2013 there
were 29 incidents, last year the number rose to 30 incidents. These attitudes
of disrespect and humiliation of foreigners were also reflected in actions such
as denial of access to public medicine and arbitrary police proceeding.

 

Last year, the organization received 330 discrimination
complaints, compared to 397 complaints received in the previous year. According
to the survey, institutional racism is the most common form of discrimination
(23%), followed by public-safety related incidents (22%) , which include
arbitrary arrests and insults from the police. Denial of access to assistance
and public services is the third leading cause for complaint, with 61 incidents
recorded in all of Spain
(19%); followed by disputes and racist attacks, also 19%.
