Embattled governor apologizes to Turkish Jews over synagogue remarks

Edirne Governor Dursun Ali Şahin, who recently announced that he will turn
a centuries-old synagogue into a museum
in the western border province in
response to Israel’s latest moves against the Palestinians at the al-Aqsa
Mosque in Jerusalem, has apologized to Turkey’s Jewish community for his
statements.

The Chief Rabbinate of Turkey’s Jewish community announced on Tuesday in
a statement that Şahin called Chief Rabbi İsak Haleva in the afternoon and
offered his apologies. According to the statement, the governor said his
remarks were misunderstood and “distorted” by some media outlets.
