Algeria – Following dispute over his Jewish background Sean Paul’s show has been cancelled

The call for boycotting American singer Sean Paul’s show was paid off. His scheduled show in August has been cancelled. In his official internet site the singer announces the postponement of his show. He notes that the show was postponed “for security reasons” and that he is disappointed that his first trip to Algeria has been postponed.

“I am very disappointed from the fact that my first trip to Algeria has been postponed,” explained Sean Paul. He hopes to be able to appear at a later date. Despite the postponement, Sean Paul continues his musical journey in Marrakesh, Morocco on August 22nd and in Colombia on September 19th.

But one of the event’s organizers says that this is a cancellation. No new date has been set up. “The concert was cancelled due to the dispute regarding the singer’s Jewish origin,” says an official representative of the Index agency.
“Sean Paul feared for his life. He received threats to his blog and to his Facebook page. So he backed down,” said the spokesperson.

Sean Paul indeed received threats from surfers. Islam, like many other Algerian surfers, reacted to the publication of the American star’s concert and wrote:
“You are not wanted”. Imène writes: “Stay where you are, if you don’t want to be burned alive in Algeria.”
Fifi recommends: “You had better cancel your concert for your own safety. Unfortunately many people do not know the difference between a Jew and a Zionist.”

Right after the event was announced, a campaign for boycotting the Sean Paul concert was launched on the social networks. A photo of the star wearing a skullcap was distributed on Facebook and Tweeter, to emphasize that the singer is Jewish and should not come to Algeria, especially after the Israeli attack on Gaza.
