Copenhagen – Jakob Engel-Schmidt, MP for the Danish Liberal
Party, wrote
an op-ed in Danish newspaper Berlingske, in which he compared Israel’s
policies in the West Bank and East Jerusalem to South Africa’s Apartheid
regime. Engel-Schmidt also said that
Israel’s security concerns cannot excuse the lack of fundamental rights for
Palestinians.
The article led to much criticism among Danish politicians. Today he
says he stands by the essence of his article, though he maybe should have
reworded it so as to focus on the issue.
