Half of the discrimination cases in Uruguay are racially motivated

The
sensitivity regarding subjects connected to racism has been undergoing change
by means of actions. In 2013 178 complaints about racial and discriminatory
behaviors were filed according to a
report submitted last Friday by the
honorary committee against racism and xenophobia

Alicia
Saora, one of the committee members, noted that about half (47%) of the
complaints were filed because of racial discrimination. One out of every four
complaints (23%) was related to discrimination due to sexual preference and one
out of 10 (11.79%) due to disability.

The
rest of the complaints were about religious topics (5.05%), sexual matters
(3.30%) as well as obesity and physical appearance (2.24%).

The
vast majority of the complaints concerned racial behaviors against Uruguayans
of African origin (92%). All the rest were divided between citizens of Jewish
origin (4.76%) and people of Native American origin (3.57%).
