Denmark marks 70th anniversary of World War II rescue of 7,300 Danish Jews

A ceremony has been held in Denmark to mark the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of 7,300 Jews during World War II to prevent their deportation to a Nazi concentration camp.

At Copenhagen’s synagogue Sunday, Jewish community leader Finn Schwarz told several hundred people it was “almost a miracle” that the October 1943 operation in Nazi-occupied Denmark dodged German patrol boats to deliver the Jews across a waterway to neutral Sweden.

The main event to mark the 70th anniversary is a special performance at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, held on October 2, with the Danish Prime Minister and Israel’s Ambassador to Denmark, Barukh Binah, in the audience, as well as many high-profile representatives from Danish political, social and cultural life, the business sector, and the Danish Jewish community. On September 29 the Jewish community itself hosted a memorial service at the synagogue in Copenhagen, with several members of the Danish government, foreign ambassadors and religious leaders in attendance.
