Parents file complaint against textbook for antisemitic content

Williamson County, Tenn.Williamson County parents have taken a small step forward by calling for the school district to review and remove a high school textbook they say is full of “antisemitic” content.

Laurie Cardoza-Moore is president of the pro-Israel group, Proclaiming Justice to the Nations, but first and foremost, she is a mother and one of several parents with very serious concerns about a text book used in an AP Human Geography class.

“To find out that this is happening in Williamson County schools, in schools that my kids go to, it was extremely disturbing to me,” Cardoza-Moore told Nashville’s News 2.

Cardozo-Moore said after months of asking the school district to review and remove the textbook, she finally filed an official complaint, mostly because of one paragraph from the 10th edition of “The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography” by James M. Rubenstein.

The paragraph reads, “If a Palestinian suicide bomber kills several dozen Israeli teenagers in a Jerusalem restaurant, is that an act of terrorism or wartime retaliation against Israeli government politics and army action?”

“With the antisemitic and the historically factually inaccurate information, why would they be teaching this information to our students?” questioned Cardoza-Moore.

The Williamson County School District confirmed with Nashville’s News 2 that the formal complaint had been filed and that a committee had been selected to review the textbook thoroughly before a decision is made.

“Now I understand the textbook has one more year but that’s not acceptable, this textbook should not be taught to another set of students,” Cardoza-Moore said.

The group of parents ultimately want the textbook removed, and will continue to take action until it is not used in the schools.

The Williamson County School District did not say when a decision will be made on the textbook.
