Maroons suspend coach for Twitter comment

Chatham, Canada – The Chatham Maroons have suspended assistant coach Kyle O’Neil pending further review for an antisemitic comment on his now-deleted Twitter account.

A message referring to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman as a “greasy Jew” was posted Friday on O’Neil’s Twitter account.

O’Neil denies posting the comment.

“This type of behaviour is not representative of the Maroons core values and will not be tolerated,” the team said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. “Chatham Maroons are committed to fostering a respectful and sportsmanlike environment on and off the ice.”

The message about Bettman was deleted from O’Neil’s account less than five minutes after he spoke Monday with a Daily News reporter. Within an hour, the entire account was deleted.

O’Neil, a former Maroons player, is in his second season as an assistant coach.

“The entire Maroons organization is shocked and disappointed in the comments posted via assistant coach Kyle O’Neil’s Twitter account,” the team said in the news release.
