Djerba – during last week an Islamist member of the Tunisian Parliament wanted to draw attention to the sale of lands to Jews in the island of Djerba, comparing the situation in the largest island off the shores of North Africa with “A second Palestine”. The racist elected official from the ruling party Ennahda proposed to pass laws that will legally restrict the possibility for Jews to acquire real estate.
These statements shocked the members of the Jewish community in Djerba, who are entitled to rights and obligations identical to those of all Tunisian citizens.
By means of this proposition, the Member of Parliament denied the rights of Tunisian Jews, thereby inciting anew the antisemitic sentiments in the Tunisian street. The ruling Islamist party did not issue any condemnation of these racist and antisemitic expressions, as of now.
Mark Zuckerberg, a Jew, expressed his lack of understanding vis-à-vis this antisemitic action. Facebook CEO decided to cancel the visit he planned to make this week to the Island in the South of Tunisia.
