Marseille – A 24 year old student was accused of committing an assault of an antisemitic nature last Sunday in the southern neighborhoods of Marseille (Marseille – Bouches-du-Rhone) and on Friday evening he was sentenced to a term of one year’s imprisonment.
The Marseille Criminal Court found him guilty of “violent acts committed against a background of race, ethnic community or religion”.
The Prosecutor had sought a sentence of 18 months of actual imprisonment.
The young man was charged that on Sunday last, he had cursed a Jewish family leaving the synagogue in Michelet Boulevard in the southern neighborhoods of the city and that he had forcefully hit the father in the face with his fist before running away. The 27-year old victim was off sick for 5 days.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday. He is studying for a Doctorate in Physics at the University of Luminy. He claims to hold dual citizenship of France and Iran. The man was not known to the police before the commission of this offence. When he was questioned while detained, he claimed to be a Moslem but not religious.
“I don’t want to be a scapegoat in the Merah case. I do not want a political trial” said the suspect during the hearing after having, while in detention, represented Mohammed Merah, the perpetrator of the killings in Toulouse and Montauban, as a “resistance fighter”, but without justifying his crimes.

“אני לא רוצה להיות שעיר לעזאזל בפרשת מרח. אני לא רוצה משפט פוליטי”, אמר החשוד במהלך השימוע, לאחר שבמהלך מעצרו, הוא הציג את מוחמד מרח, מבצע מעשי ההרג בטולוז ובמונטובן (Montauban), בתור “לוחם מחתרת” אך מבלי להצדיק את פשעיו.
