Richmond Police investigate possible hate crime

Richmond, VA – Richmond police were called to an East end neighborhood Sunday morning to investigate what some who live there believe was a hate crime.

That’s because Saturday night a rock was thrown into the home Richard McKann shares with his wife and 12-year-old daughter. Mckann’s wife is Jewish.

The family thinks the crime could be tied to this weekend’s anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night of brutal attacks against jews by the Nazis in 1938.

“Just ear shattering, glass everywhere,” is how McKann described the incident.

After looking closer, the family found the rock inside and another outside that they think was thrown but didn’t make it through. Further proof, McKann said, that they were specifically targeted.

“Sure, vandalism happens. There are kids running around, but they tried twice.”

McKann thinks they were targeted because an Israeli flag flies in front of their home.

He added the fact that no other nearby homes were hit supports the idea that this was a hate crime.

He also pointed to a spree of anti semetic vandalism and even arson that happened in Brooklyn, New York this weekend. Officials there believe those crimes too were tied to the Kristallnacht anniversary.
