Riots at former concentration camp

Walldorf – Unknown persons smashed the remembrance boards at the site of the concentration camp near Walldorf and left antisemitic graffiti at the location.  Members of the international students’ camp being held at the site were shocked.

A shadow was cast over the concluding ceremony of the study and work camp at Walldorf. Students from Israel, Romania, and Germany participated for a week in excavations that took place at the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp.  But the ending was indeed sad.

When those taking part in the camp arrived at the area of the concentration camp on Friday morning, they saw that the two information boards erected on the pathway had been damaged.  ‘At first, we thought that this had been done by drunken youths.  But the police told us later that antisemitic graffiti had been found at several locations.  I did not think that the extreme Right was so rooted in society today’ said a German participant, Julia Schmeig.  With these words she also expressed the shock experienced by the Israeli and Romanian youth.
