Antisemitic reference in the ‘De Tijd’ daily newspaper

Antwerp – The daily newspaper ‘De Tijd’ published on February 23rd 2011 two articles titled “Gerecht sluit kluizen van diamantaires” (“Court closes safe boxes of diamond merchants”) and “Kluizen verzegeld in diamantwijk” (“Blocked safe boxes in the diamond merchants’ quarter”), in which the writer explicitly indicated in two different occasions the religious identity of the person involved. This, while the articles only indicated the person’s first name and the initial letter of his family name;

The articles contained the following excerpts:

  • ” Robert B. een bekende Joodse vastgoedmakelaar en diamanthandelaar” (“Robert B., well known Jewish real estate agent and diamond merchant”).
  • ” Bij de Joodse zakenman” (with the Jewish businessman”).

Following this publication, the ‘Forum der Joodse Organisaties’ – ‘Forum of Jewish Organizations’ – is checking the matter with the daily newspaper.
