Tunisia – Explosion near the Ancient Synagogue in Djerba

On 11 April 2002 a truck carrying gas exploded near the ancient synagogue on the island of Djerba in Tunisia. Fourteen people were killed in the explosion, most of them tourists from Germany, and two Jews employed at the synagogue. The Tunisian authorities have claimed that it is not clear whether this was an attack or an accident. As already mentioned, most of the victims in the incident were German nationals, and the German authorities believe that it it was most probably an attack.
