Israel – Memorial Service for the Journalist Daniel Pearl at the Western Wall

On 5th March 2002, a memorial service was held at the Western Wall in Jerusalem for Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl who was murdered in Pakistan. The service was attended by a number of Pearl’s relatives living in Israel, including his grandmother Tova Pearl. Deputy Foreign Minister Rabbi Michael Melchior said during the service that Pearl’s last words “I am a Jew” have touched the heart of every Jew in the world. He noted that the Forum for the Coordination of the Stuggle Against Antisemitism which he heads, decided to hold the memorial service for Pearl at the most sacred site of the Jewish people because he had not been brought to proper Jewish burial.
