On 22 September 2001, a person of North African extraction began harassing a group of Jewish youths at the Epinettes synagogue in Lilas quarter, hitting one of them in the head. When the man returned to his flat, which is above the synagogue, he threw a vase out of the window. The vase fell on the foot of one of the youths.
