On 30th October, 2001, the cornerstone is to be laid for the Holocaust Memorial Monument in Berlin. The President of the German Parliament, Wolfgang Thierze is to participate in the event. The monument, designed by the American architect Peter Eisenmann, comprises a maze of 2,700 concrete columns of various heights, covering an area the size of a football stadium.
At the far end of the site, near the Brandenburg Gate, there is to be an information center where the names of three million identified Jewish victims will be displayed. The cost of the monument is about DM50 million and will be covered in part by contributions from citizens.
