At a Palestinian Solidarity Campaign meeting held on the sidelines of the Liberal Democrat’s Party Conference, party member Baroness Jenny Tonge stated that, “That the pro-Israeli lobby has got its grips on the Western world, its financial grips. I think they have probably got a certain grip on our party.” Tonge’s comments met with sharp criticism and calls for her to be removed from the party. In the end, the leader of the party, Sir Menzies Campbell, sufficed in sending Tonge a letter condemning her comments and “their clear antisemitic connotations.”
